The University of Bombay was established in 1857 in Fort. It was one of the first educational institutions founded by the British in India. Built in the Gothic architectural style, the building houses the university’s administrative division and a library that holds many original manuscripts.

At 85 metres (280 feet), the Rajabai Tower was once the tallest structure in Bombay. It was designed by English architect Sir George Gilbert Scott and modelled on the Big Ben in London. Businessman Premchand Roychand, who established the Bombay Stock Exchange, covered its construction cost on the condition that the clock tower be named after his mother.
