The Western India Turf Club moves to its present location in 1878, when Sir Cusrow N Wadia donated 225 acres of marshy land at the Mahalaxmi Flats. Races lasted only one season – no one could stand the smell from the open drains nearby – but the problem was soon fixed and regular races began in 1883. The track, one of the best in the country, is oval shaped with a 2,400 metre straight chute, which allows for spectacular race viewing since there are no blind curves. It is modelled on the Caulfield Racecourse in Melbourne. Over the years, the club started a school for jockeys, and modernised its timekeeping and totalizator board, which keeps track of the racing statistics, and introduced restaurants on its property.
