Popularly known as the ‘GPO’, the General Post Office is the central post office of Bombay, strategically located behind the Victoria Terminus. Designed by British architect John Begg, the GPO is a prime example of Indo-Saracenic architecture. Modelled on the Gol Gumbaz in Bijapur, Karnataka, it covers an area of 11,000 square metres (120,000 square feet). Black basalt with a dressing of yellow Kurla stone and white stones from Dhrangdra are the predominant materials used in construction. Its chief architectural feature is the ethereal central hall that rises up to the great dome. Work began in 1904 and was completed in 1913, at a cost of Rs 1,809,000.
