The tip of Apollo Bunder’s harbour had long been a crude jetty used by fisher folks. Realising that the spot was a good vantage point to spot incoming ships, the British renovated and used it a landing place for high ranking officials. It had nothing more than a make-shift iron shed with a curved roof that looked very much like a Mongol tent. By the time the surrounding foundations were filled in and the Gateway was opened on 4 December 1924. It was designed by architect George Wittet.
