The ten days of Ganesh Utsav in the city is a time for festivities. Days one, five, seven, and ten are considered auspicious for immersion of the idol. The smaller, individually owned idols are immersed on the first and fifth day, while the community-based idols go on the other days. Immersing Lord Ganesh during Ganesh Chaturthi festival celebrations at Girgaum Chowpatty beach in Mumbai are accompanied by cries of ‘Ganpati Bapa Morya’ the idols are immersed in the sea. ‘Phudcha Varshi Laukar Ya’! (Translates as, come back sooner next year!) The devotees chant as they immerse the idol into the sea.
