Esplanade House derives its name from the Esplanade ‘maidan’ nearby. It is one of the finest residential buildings architecturally and historically, representing the Neo Classical style of the 19th century with its columns, pilasters and quoins and an intriguing baroque façade. Esplanade House was once the private residence of industrialist Jamsetji Tata. The construction of this grand building began in 1885, based on designs by Mr Morris (of Gostling and Morris and Jamsetji Tata himself. It was completed in 1887.
The heritage building now houses the headquarters of the RD Sethna Scholarship Fund which owns the building. Architect Vikas Dilawari’s restoration of Esplanade House won an Honourable Mention at the 2014 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation.
