The Elphinstone Institute was founded, which started in the year 1834 in the honour of Mountstuart Elphinstone, Governor of Bombay (1819-1827). In 1888 Elphinstone College moved to its present location opposite Prince of Wales Museum (Now Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya).
The David Sassoon Library, named after the famous Baghdadi Jewish philanthropist, David Sassoon, was constructed by architects J Campbell and G E Gosling from the Scott McClelland and Company. It cost Rs 125,000 to build, with the Sassoon family donating Rs 60.000 and the government paying the remaining amount. Completed In 1870.
