Alexandra Dock Year-1914, (Code : 099)
Bungalow at Malabar Hill Year-1908, (Code : 229)
- Archival Photo Print
Malabar Hill, once the “wild west” of Mumbai, was densely forested.
In the early 19th century, Mountstuart El-phinstone, then governor of Bombay, built recreational bungalows on Malabar Hill. These were used during hunting trips in the Malabar Hill forest.
These bungalows were essentially vacation homes for weekends. In the 1860s, with the cotton boom, wealthy people began to take an interest in Malabar Hill. The forest was cleared, plots were created, and houses began to be built. The area’s prosperity grew with the governor’s move to Malabar Hill attracting other affluent residents, and Ridge road was built to provide access to the newly established bungalows of the wealthy.
